How do people make money from the stock market?

Can someone give me a good explanation of how people make their entire living off the stock market or even do it as a side business. Also please give a brief description of the stock market actually works (I have read a few websites about it).

I understand the concept of buying and selling stock but if a certain stock that cost $50.00 goes up like a $1 and you have about 50 of those stocks how do you make a profit. Because it seems like a large investment for a few dollars. 

I know that stocks are supposed to be a long terma dn risky investment but rarely does a stock go up a few dollars.

Also, do you have to buy stocks through a broker and doesn't that just add to costs, and reduce your profit.
