JRNL 1160 Week 2 Assignment | Kwantlen Polytechnic University
Week 2 Homework-
For the homework assignment this week, I would
like you to either write, record (audio) or record (video) a response to the
following question:
Why do you think journalism matters in our society? What does
good journalism look like in your opinion? Where/how can journalism be
improved?
You do not need to answer each question
separately. I am looking for an overall assessment, and your opinion on the
question.
If there is something that I said in class, or
that was on one of the slides, feel free to reference it (e.g., "as was
discussed in class..."). You don't need a separate citation (e.g., Razavi,
2023) for something I said in class. If there is something from the reading for
the first week that jumps out at you, feel free to reference the reading as
well (e.g., "as mentioned by Damian Radcliffe, in his article in The
Conversation, or "Radcliffe, 2023" if you want a more formal academic
citation format. Either is acceptable).
The strongest answers will reference the
reading (which is related to the question at hand) and/or course
material.
If you write a response to the question, your
responses should be around 200-250 words. Please upload as a Word file, Pages,
or Google Doc. That way I can get feedback to you. No PDFs or direct text
inputs please.
If you prefer to record audio or video, your
response should be no more than 2:30 (2 minutes and 30 seconds) in length.
Audio files can be sent as .mp3 or .wav, video files can be sent as .mov or
.mp4.
Your response should be clearly articulated
and sound polished.
I strongly recommend writing down your
thoughts, or even directly what you are going to say, if you are doing a
recorded audio or video response (we will practice this more as we go through
the term; you don't want your answer to sound rambling, unpolished, or off the
cuff).
The homework assignments are worth a
"point." There will be ten assignments over the course of the term.
The points add up, and can make a big difference in overall grade! Students who
complete all ten assignments will get an extra point, which can often be the
difference between an A- and a B+ when tallying the grades.
Finally, here is the specific evaluation
criteria that I will be evaluating you on (as per the syllabus):
The strongest responses will...
- Demonstrate
engagement with course material. This should include referencing the
readings/podcasts, using examples and/or drawing on your own personal
experience in answering the question.
- Make
a clear and concise argument using simple, easy-to-understand
language.
- Are
focused (e.g., a clearly defined theme or idea that can be easily
summarized; do not ramble).
- Have
been proofread, have no spelling mistakes or obvious grammatical errors.
- Are
submitted before the deadline (no late entries!).
