What Do You Think? Was the “Little Albert” Study Ethical?

After watching the video on “Little Albert” in the link below, write a paragraph explaining whether they would approve the study today if they were members of an Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Research Participants.

Intergenerational Transmission of Violence (adapted from Malley-Morrison & Yap, 2001)

Individual and societal problems, according to behavioural researchers, are created by the haphazard use of reinforcement and over-reliance on punishment. These learning theorists have argued that one of the principal reasons for the intergenerational transmission of violence in families is each new generation’s modeling of the violent behaviours of their parents’ generation. There is considerable evidence that experiencing or witnessing intrafamilial violence in childhood is a risk factor for violence in later close relationships (e.g., Bernard & Bernard, 1983; Cappell & Heiner, 1990; Smith & Williams, 1992), and there is a positive correlation between amount of violence experienced or witnessed during childhood and judgments of violence as non-abusive and acceptable (e.g., Graziano & Nemaste, 1990).

Where you think people's views of acceptable and non-acceptable disciplinary practices and conflict resolution strategies come from. What reinforcements did you observe following on the behaviours of those models? If you was going to use learning principles to design a program to reduce parents’ use of violence against their children, what would the nature of that program be and what learning principles who would recommend?
