ENG 140 Week 3 Assignment | Indiana Wesleyan University
Instructions
This paper is a compare
and contrast essay. You will explain the similarities and differences between
two topics of your choice.
As an academic paper, it
should include a thesis statement as the last sentence of the introductory
paragraph. The body paragraphs must support the thesis statement by
relating specific similarities and differences between the topics. In the
conclusion, you should summarize the similarities and differences discussed in
the body paragraphs and remind your audience of your thesis statement by
rephrasing it.
The minimum length for
this assignment is 500 words. Use current APA format. Write the entire
essay in third-person.
1.
Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for
earning your grade.
2.
Read the Sample Student Essay, paying attention to the notes
that have been recorded in the right margin.
3.
Using the Student Sample Essay as a guide, write a Compare and
Contrast Essay of at least 500 words in length in which you identify and
illustrate the similarities and/or differences between the two topics. Use the
document Suggested Organization Options for Comparison Essays to help you
decide how to structure your essay.
4.
The following elements are required:
a.
Introductory paragraph that opens with a biblical quote or a famous quote
from brainyquote.com or
a similar website (cite your source!).
b.
Thesis statement as the final sentence of your introduction that
identifies both subjects, indicates whether they are similar, different, or
both, and previews the categories which will be used to compare and/or contrast
the topics.
c.
Choose one of the following organizational patterns for your
essay:
i.
Point-by-point format – each body paragraph uses a specific
category to compare the topic, meaning that both topics are discussed in each
paragraph (this strategy is recommended for most topics, and is used in the
Student Sample Essay).
ii.
Block format – Topic A is explained in one body paragraph, and
topic B is explained in a separate body paragraph.
d.
A topic sentence at the beginning of each body paragraph that
introduces the category which will be used to compare the topics
(Point-by-point format) or introduces the topic that will be discussed (Block
format).
e.
A conclusion paragraph in which you summarize the similarities
and differences between the topics that you discussed in the body paragraphs
and in which you paraphrase the thesis statement.
f.
Proofread your draft to make sure your sentences and comparisons
exhibit parallel
structure.
g.
It is recommended that you submit the assignment instructions
above and your draft to Tutor.com for feedback by day five.
h.
Revise and edit your draft based on the feedback you receive
from Tutor.com and submit your revised draft to Assignment 3.4 by the end of
the workshop.
i.
Post your rough draft to Discussion Board 4.2 so that one of
your peers can review it in Workshop 4.
