Write the introduction and body paragraphs in past tense (Present tense may be used in the conclusion only)
1.
Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for
earning your grade.
2.
Read the excerpt from A Quiet Strength in which
Dungy describes his mother (pp. 9-10) and the passage where he describes his
father (pp. 11-16). Pay close attention to the strategies Dungy uses to reveal
the impact these people had on his life.
3.
Read the student sample essay “No Hurdle Too High," paying attention
to the notes that have been recorded in the right margin.
4.
Using the personal memoir template as a guide (you may
change the suggested wording if you like), write a personal memoir of at least
1000 words in length in which you describe the subject, identify and illustrate
the character traits that caused the subject to have a significant impact on
your life, and reflect on how you are different as a result of your
relationship with the subject.
5.
The following elements are required:
a.
An introductory paragraph that opens with a quote (either
something the subject said often or something he or she said once that had a
significant impact on you). Alternately, you could begin with a biblical quote or
famous quote from brainyquote.com or a similar website (cite your source!)
b.
Thesis statement as the final
sentence of your introduction that gives the reader a single impression of the
subject and identifies the significance of the subject.
c.
Physical description of the subject, either in a block of
description as the first body paragraph or sprinkled throughout the essay.
d.
A topic sentence at the beginning of each body paragraph that
introduces the character trait or lesson that will be illustrated in the
paragraph.
e.
A conclusion paragraph in which you summarize the character
traits that caused the subject to have a significant impact on your reader and
paraphrasings the thesis statement.
f.
Submit the assignment instructions above and your draft to Tutor.com for feedback by day four. (This will ensure that you
receive feedback in time to incorporate it, since it takes 24 hours to get
feedback.) While not required; this is strongly encouraged.
g.
Revise and edit your memoir based on the feedback you receive
from Tutor.com and submit your memoir to the assignment submission folder using
