Goblin Fruit--Question 1

The poem “Goblin Market” this week clearly focused on the role of God and his relationship with the individual. Not only did it focus on his relationship, but the poem was also about self-control and temptation from the sexual sin of the outside world. Even in the event of being strong and resisting the temptation of the sexual sin of the outside world, Lizzie was still headstrong in her faith and resisted against the goblins, and once they realized they could not seduce her with their slick words the goblins turned to try and rape her. The text says, “Their looks were evil. Lashing their tails They trod and hustled her, Elbowed and jostled her, 400 Clawed with their nails, Barking, mewing, hissing, mocking, Tore her gown and soiled her stocking, Twitched her hair out by the roots, Stamped upon her tender feet, 405 Held her hands and squeezed their fruits Against her mouth to make her eat”(Rossetti 10).  However, Lizzie was too strong for them and they eventually gave up and she was able to return and save Laura and nurse her back to health. I think in the end where the sisters warned their children about the goblin men was important, because as young adults it is normal to have curiosity, but it is very easy to stray off of the path and fall into evil temptations that possibly can end up ruining one's life especially if/when one is walking away from God.
