Week 3 Discussion - Ethics

In this week's discussion board, we will explore the role of ethics in research. To prepare for this discussion, review the following resources:

Rooney, B. & Evans, A. (2019). Research in psychology: An Ethical Enterprise (Links to an external site.). In Methods in psychological research (pp. 57-84). SAGE Publications, Inc.

Ethics in Research

Suggestions for minimizing the risk of participation in psychology research:  Putting Ethics Into Practice (Links to an external site.)

You will also want to review the APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (Links to an external site.).

Watch the video describing the Zimbardo Prison Study

In your initial discussion board post, due Wednesdays by 11:59pm EST, discuss one ethical piece to this study, including the following information:

- a description of the ethical concern

- the connection of this ethical concern to the APA Code of Ethics (which ethical principles is this concern connected to)

- how might this research study (as it was originally designed) trigger trauma in participants (you only need to identify one element)

In your reply post to peers, due Sunday by 11:59pm EST, propose a modern update for this study that addresses the ethical concern your peer identified.  How could this study be done that addresses this ethical concern? Based on this alteration, how might the research design change or impact the data collected or the conclusions from this study? In other words, how might the results change once that ethical concern is addressed?

Please refer to the Discussion Board rubric for grading criteria. Note: You are required to respond to at least three (3) of your classmates for full participation points.

In completing this assignment, you will be demonstrating the following learning outcomes:

B-1 Explain the ethical issues related to doing research

B-4 Describe the APA's Code of Ethics

B-5 Recognize the ways in which participation in research studies can trigger trauma in participants.
