Assignment 4.3: Thesis Statement
and Outline -- Peer Review (Deliverable: Discussion post)
Description
In this assignment, you will develop a working thesis statement for your
research paper and construct an outline for your essay. In your outline, you
will support your thesis with logical thinking and compelling evidence. You
will begin planning the structure of your research paper, and an outline is the
best way to create that structure. Then you will post your thesis statement and
outline to the discussion forum for review by your peers.
Instructions
1. Review the strategies for developing a strong thesis statement in
Chapter 6. Then review your initial reflections on the topic for your research
paper in Assignment 3.2 and the research you are doing for your source review.
2. Begin your outline by synthesizing your learning on your topic into a
thesis statement for your research paper.
3. Then, in a Word document, create an outline for your research paper.
If you created note cards during your research, begin by organizing the note
cards into related groups. These groups will become the “letters” of your
outline and, eventually, the paragraphs in your paper. Start your outline by
stating your thesis, and then use the groups of note cards to plan out each of
the supporting body paragraphs. Be sure to construct your outline using
complete sentences — this will make it easier to write your first draft when
the time comes.
4. Type your name at the top of the first page, then save your Word
document to your computer. Name the file YourLastName_ThesisStatement&Outline(Draft).
5. Click on the link above to enter the discussion forum. Create a
thread, enter your name in the subject line, then attach your saved Word
document, Finally, post the thread.
6. Reply to at least two of your classmates' posts, offering them
detailed feedback about their posted thesis statement and outline. (To ensure
that the peer reviews are equally distributed, reply to the classmates' initial
posts immediately following yours.)
7. Use the feedback from your classmates (and instructor) to revise and
refine your thesis statement and outline Word document. Once you are satisfied
with the result, post the revised version in your thread.
