The buildings in Pisa, and throughout Italy, were heavily damaged in World War II. In the United States, the U.S. Army's Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program (MFAA) sought to protect the treasures that were destroyed in the war. One of the men who served in this unit during World War II was Deane Keller, a professor at Yale before and after the war. Keller was one of the first to enter Pisa after it was secured by the Allies, and he is credited for saving countless works of art in both Florence and Pisa. Among them are the many frescoes at Pisa that were badly damaged by fire. Keller is given credit for quickly bringing in a team to save the delicate artwork.

In 2000, his ashes were buried at Campo Santo, the cemetery in the Square of Miracles.

Do you feel like we as a world would have the same respect for someone like Deane Keller as they did during World War II?  Does our society understand the importance of art?  Why, or why not?
