HCA 405 Week 2 Discussion 2 | Southwestern College

In the highly digital marketplace, consumers have more ways than ever to access information. Online resources provide an anonymous way to seek information on health conditions and treatments.  Also, increased patient out of pocket expenses potentially discourage reaching out to one’s physician for less than serious health issues and/or for perceived elective services or products.

Furthermore, the consumer may not have much choice in healthcare providers (physicians, facilities, specialists, etc.) due to the insurance he or she has.

Discuss how might a healthcare provider drive preference to influence a patient's choice to circumvent health insurance coverage for particular services and/or products.

o Is this ethical?

o Is it legal?

Discuss how might a physician drive a patient's choice to a specific facility, i.e. Surgical Center, Hospital, Physician Office, Clinic, Laboratory, Radiology, or other Specialty Site that the physician has a stake in.

o What difference does the physician role as a stakeholder in each of these settings make?

o Is this ethical?

o Is it legal?

Provide examples of possible services and products that healthcare providers might market to try to influence a consumer's decision making and redirect said consumer to their facility.
