HCA 315 Week 1 Discussion | Southwestern College
Prompt:
Health economics is increasingly becoming more important
within our society due to the steep incline in size and scope of
the healthcare economy in comparison to other sectors of the economy.
This leads to resources becoming more scarce. Sometimes our wants and
needs are so far apart, that it creates a divide. In knowing that medical
decisions involve costs versus benefits, rational decision-making has to result
in ideal choices in order to balance out cost versus benefits, i.e. if we are
to spend more on genetic testing and counseling, then we need to spend a little
less on other services, given scarce resources.
Please discuss the following:
·
First of all, explain why individuals demand health care.
o
Is it for personal benefit or gain? How so?
o
How does taking care of one's health care needs affect the
health of our population?
§ What is the
difference between individual and population health?
Would an increase in the average American income affect the
level of health in the United States?
Describe factors that make it difficult to measure the output in
the medical care markets.
Discuss whether or not you agree with the following statement
and please substantiate your thoughts:
“Traditional”
marketing methods of using shock value or scare tactics geared towards rational
consumer behavior or behavior modification are starting to show
ineffectiveness, i.e. Interventions such as commercials used to reduce smoking
or driving accidents.
·
Are they really modifying consumer behavior?
·
Define and discuss rational behavior:
o
Why is it important?
o
How does rational behavior impact healthcare economics
as opposed to other industries?
