ENGL 108 Assignment 1 | Canvas University
1. (Pg. 19) My mother had not believed in friendships among women. She said women weren't to be trusted. This reminds me of how my mom lets me know everyday to be mindful of who I call my friends and my only real friends is her and my siblings and of course the family.
2. (Pg. 19) In the novel it states " But as I watched Sylvia, Angela, and Gigi walk past our window, I was struck with something deeply unfamiliar a longing to be a part of who they were" This quote reveals her loneliness that he has and the disconnect from her peers.
3. (Pg. 25) “his eyes moving slowly over my bare legs. "You're a black queen he said. Your body is a temple. It should be covered, I held tighter to my father's hand." I feel this quote brings exposure to her body and fear that she had inside.
4. (Pg. 35) I realized throughout the novel, so far August has been waiting to become close friends with Sylvia, Gigi, and Angela that it became an obsession. As stated from the the text " Before they were mine, I stared at their necks, watched their perfect hands close around jump ropes and handballs, saw their brightly polished nails."
5. (Pg. 53) "Then Clyde got drafted and went to Vietnam. On the morning we said good bye, my mother broke down and cried, her pain so raw I covered my eyes and shivered." These words brings back so many memories about what my family has been through. When my cousin went to the army he was killed in a war. He was my grandmother favorite well he still is but when he left she was so devastated she wouldn't talk, eat, sleep she went into a deep depression for a while. Then to find out he was killed was even worser. My family has not been the same for a while.
