ENGL 102 Week 1 Assignment 3 | Canvas University
Topic Proposal
In the Topic Proposal you will explain to me what topic you
would like to research and write your paper on. Your choice of topic is
entirely your decision. However, there are a few things you should consider in
choosing a topic:
1. Choose a topic you are genuinely interested in. You
will be spending a lot of time on this, and I want you to enjoy learning more
about your topic.
2. Choose a topic of appropriate scope for the time we have.
Avoid choosing a topic that is too broad.
For example, "The War On Drugs" is too broad a topic
for our class, but "Legalizing Cannabis in Philadelphia" would be a
topic of appropriate scope.
3. Choose a topic that has an element of debate associated with
it or for which you can formulate a research question.
For example, if my topic were "Legalizing Cannabis in
Philadelphia", I would look at the debate over whether legalization is a
good idea or not. My research question would be "What would be the
negative and positive effects of legalizing cannabis in Philadelphia?"
4. Choose a topic that is a matter of evidence, interpretation,
and analysis; not a question of faith.
For example, "Did Jesus of Nazareth actually exist?"
is a fine research question. However, a topic like "Why Jesus is the son
of God" is ultimately a question of faith, not evidence. Similarly, topics
that will rely primarily upon religious texts without corroborating
historical evidence are often not strong topic choices. If you have any
questions about this, please contact me.
Your topic proposal should consist of six numbered sections
where you:
1. State your topic.
2. Explain why your
topic is important.
3. Explain the
current debate surrounding your topic.
4. State your
research question.
5. Describe in
detail what sources you will consult (Be very specific. Mention specific
authors and titles).
6. Take an early
guess as to what you think your answer to your research question might
be.
This assignment should be at least 1 page.
This assignment is due at the end of Week 1.
