PSY 0371 Week 1 Assignment 4 | San Francisco State University | Assignment Help
Homework 4
Continue to record the following information every day (up through
December 1, 2020):
1. the number of hours
of sleep you got;
2. the number of cups
of caffeine drinks you had;
3. the number of cups
of non-caffeinated drinks you had;
4. the number of hours
you spent looking at a phone, computer screen, TV, etc.
(NOTE: round hours to the nearest half hour ; count each drink - however
big or small - as one drink. And remember to report the date on which you
recorded your data.)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the fourth homework assignment, I will ask you to
essentially re-do Homework 3 and the last question of Homework 2, but with
this week's data. This is to ensure that people who had difficulty with
Homeworks 2 and 3 are now on track. I will add a few questions to
complete the section on variance and standard deviation. This material is
important, and will be important as we move on in the class.
For the number of hours of sleep you get this
week (i.e., for Monday, Oct. 5 through Friday, Oct. 9 ; N=5), answer the
following questions:
1. Report the number
of hours of sleep you got (and the date for each).
2. Compute the mean of
the number of hours of sleep you got in (1) above.
3. Transform the data
in (1) above by subtracting the mean that you computed in (2) from each score;
these are the mean deviations of the N=5 original scores in (1).
4. Square each of the
transformed scores that you obtained in (3); these are the squared mean deviations
of the N=5 original scores in (1).
5. Compute the mean of
these squared scores; this is the variance.
6. Take (the positive
value of) the square root of the variance you computed in (5); this is the
standard deviation.
7. Divide each of the
mean deviations you got in (3) above by the standard deviation you got in (6);
these are the z-scores of the original N=5 scores in (1).
8. (NEW THIS WEEK): What is the mean
of the z-scores in (7)?
9. (NEW THIS WEEK): What is the
standard deviation of the z-scores in (7)?
10. List all possible
samples of size n=3 that you can obtain from the raw data you reported in (1)
above. (There should be ten such samples, some of which may repeat if you
slept the same number of hours on some nights.)
11. For each sample of
size n=3 that you listed in (10), compute the mean of the sample. (You
should get ten means for the ten samples of size n=3 you listed in (10).)
12. What is the mean of
the ten sample means you found in (11)? (Hint: As a check of your work,
your answer should be the same as the mean of the raw scores you got in (2).)
13. (NEW THIS WEEK): What is the
variance of the ten sample means you found in (11)? Is this larger or
smaller than the variance of the raw scores that you found in (5)?
14. (NEW THIS WEEK): What is the
standard deviation of the ten sample means you found in (11)? Is this
larger or smaller than the standard deviation of the raw scores that you found
in (6)?
This homework assignment is due in one week, i.e., by Thursday, October 15. Please submit your homework assignment to the GTA of your lab sectio
