DISCUSSION: Practical Speaking and Listening

After you have read Chapters 1 and 3, please engage in a discussion with your classmates. Please address the following:

·         Introduce yourself and tell us why you are taking COM 101. What are your career plans and how will public speaking play a role in your career? Have you had any other public speaking experience? Tell us about it.

·         Discuss the "transactional model" of public speaking. What are the implications of the transactional model on the public speaker?

·         Using your computer camera or another device, record a video of yourself saying "I love you" in three ways: Sincerely, Sarcastically and Lustfully. When you view your classmates "I Love You" video posts, think about and discuss "content" and "relational components" in communications. ·         Discuss the importance of listening to a public speaker or to listening to a classmate's speech. What are the norms for audience behavior? How will you feel if you notice an audience member is inattentive?  Also, how can you, as a speaker, through use of repetition, redundancy, clear signposts (transitions), and so forth, overcome the known obstacles to effective listening?
