COM 101 Week1 Discussion 2

DISCUSSION: Practical Speaking and Listening

After you have read Chapters 1 and 3, please engage in a discussion with your classmates. Please address the following:

·         Introduce yourself and tell us why you are taking COM 101. What are your career plans and how will public speaking play a role in your career? Have you had any other public speaking experience? Tell us about it.

·         Discuss the "transactional model" of public speaking. What are the implications of the transactional model on the public speaker?

·         Using your computer camera or another device, record a video of yourself saying "I love you" in three ways: Sincerely, Sarcastically and Lustfully. When you view your classmates "I Love You" video posts, think about and discuss "content" and "relational components" in communications. (To record or upload your video, click on the "Record/Upload Media" button on the bottom tool bar. It is the video icon on just to the right of the center of the tool bar.)

·         Discuss the importance of listening to a public speaker or to listening to a classmate's speech. What are the norms for audience behavior? How will you feel if you notice an audience member is inattentive?  Also, how can you, as a speaker, through use of repetition, redundancy, clear signposts (transitions), and so forth, overcome the known obstacles to effective listening?
