Module 3 Discussions - Wallowing in Complexity: A Social Exercise

You need the entire week to do this exercise, so start right away.

On the first day of the week, read Chapter 2, pages 22-24 (Ramage, et al.). Stop at the subsection titled 'Seeing Each Academic Discipline as a Field of Inquiry and Argument.'

Below is step one in the three-step process. Please follow the instructions carefully.

1.    In the Allyn & Bacon Guide, read pages 26-27 on freewriting and focused freewriting. Note especially the idea of marking the 'hot spots' in your writing (at the top of page 27).

2.    Read The SituationPreview the document (PDF).

3.    After reading 'The Situation,' set your timer for five minutes and freewrite your personal response to the proposed policies. You may respond to any one of the suggestions, all of the suggestions, or the ideas as a whole. When you have finished your freewriting, read over it and mark any hot spots.

4.    Choose some part of your freewriting and post it to this discussion.

5.    Read at least five other students' responses to 'The Situation' and respond to at least one.

Instructions for steps two and three will be provided by the instructor at the appropriate time during the week. The three sets of instructions will take you through the entire exercise, including posting and replying to responses, playing your role, and eventually, voting on the proposals.

Keep in mind that people often find it difficult to consider other points of view on topics that they feel strongly about. And yet, open-minded examination of an opposing position is a prerequisite for intelligent argument and debate. Such examination also often yields unexpected discoveries about one's own position, sometimes strengthening it, sometimes weakening it.
