Module 1 Discussions - Risky Statements

The first problem every writer has to solve is the content problem: What do I want to say? And believe it or not, civilization often gets in the way of figuring that out. Our society requires that we control what we say; every child learns that the first time he or she blurts out, "Aunt Patty, you're so fat!" Such self-censoring is a necessary skill if we want to preserve a cordial society, but too often we censor even our thoughts, so that we stop ourselves from thinking beyond the acceptable parameters (whatever we think those are). The creative process gets stifled.

We all need to understand that it's all right to allow ourselves to think, imagine, speculate, and explore without censoring our ideas, especially at the beginning of an assignment. The more ideas we have to begin with, the better are our chances of coming up with a good one for the assignment.

Choose any topic you'd like and, by the end of the second day of the week, post a risky or challenging statement about that topic. You don't have to worry about supporting your statement at all, so be outlandish; get out there on the edge and fall over. The point here is to see how creative you can let yourself be!

Be sure to check back later in the week to read some of your classmates' statements.
