• In this discussion, we will begin to
explore the properties of various star types and develop an understanding of
how the examination of the light emanating from astronomical objects can reveal
a plethora of information about them. Here we will make the connection between
a star's color, called its spectral class, and its luminosity and look at the
tools astronomers use to classify stars; much the same way biologists classify
animal species. As we will see, the stars in the astronomical zoo are just as
varied as species are on Earth.

the three discussion questions by the midpoint of the lesson (Wednesday for a
one week lesson and Saturday for a two week lesson) and respond to at least two
of your peers, or the instructor’s follow-up posts, in either thread no later
than the last Sunday of the lesson.
