HUMU 250: Final
Multimedia Presentation
This term, we are discussing and analyzing many ways
in which digital technologies are fundamentally influencing or changing
society. Now, you will take what you are learning and teach others (you will
need to select a specific audience).
This
assignment has several parts:
First,
select one of these topics (you are encouraged to select your own—but if you
do, you must clear it with your instructor!)
1. The
impact of the use/growth/spread of digital tools and/or the use of social media
(“crowdsourcing” might be an example).
2. The
impact of 3-D printers: (http://www.ted.com/talks/lisa_harouni_a_primer_on_3d_printing.html)
3. The
impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
4.
The impact of GIS
5.
The impact of Big Data (social media
that collects and sells your data, for example)
6. The
impact of driverless cars/trucks/trains/airplanes
7.
The impact of robots (Anybots, for
example, or Elder Care Robots).
8. The
impact of digital automation
9. The
impact of smart grids
10. The
impact of the Internet of Things (IoT)
Second, choose
one of following areas: education (elementary, secondary, or post-secondary),
law, law enforcement, psychology, business, healthcare, construction,
engineering, computer science or any other field in which you have an interest.
Be as specific as possible in terms of the field you are covering. For example,
instead of “medicine” you might look at “cardiology” or “organ transplants.”
Third, explain how the
use of your chosen technology in your chosen field will affect society at
large?
Example: How
will digital automation impact healthcare? How will robots impact national
defense? How will crowdsourcing help solve engineering problems? (Your
thesis will be your answer to this question or these questions).
Then explain how
you know. You will need research to support your
thesis (a minimum of three authoritative sources), but it’s up to you to synthesize and cite those sources for
the audience.
When you have chosen all three parts of the
assignment and have determined your thesis statement, you will compose an 8-10
minute multimedia presentation. This is roughly 20-25 narrated slides and one
additional slide for your References list (APA format) at the end.
The presentation should not require the listener to
click anything to move forward through the slides or to start the audio
narration—it should be something you could run on a loop.
This
assignment is worth 200 points.
NOTE: Your
previous assignments have prepared you for this final assignment. If you turned
everything in, you will have had ample time to write, revise, and practice your
narration (script), compose the first two slides with audio narration tied to
relevant graphics (mini-presentation), and write/present your introduction and
thesis statement (proposal, script, and mini-presentation).
