Assignment: Animal Behavior Observation

This week you will be observing an animal. You can choose a family pet, insects, birds at the beach, a squirrel in your yard, etc. The key is that the animal is active!

It is raining in the Santa Cruz area this week, so if you'd like, you can use an animal live webcam, there are great webcams available at Explore.org

Instructions:

·         Please complete the following in one document. You may choose to use bullet points or paragraph style writing. Optional- include photos or screenshots (webcam) of your animal.

·         Please submit here via Canvas. You can copy and paste your write up, or submit a Word doc or PDF or your work. You can also upload directly from Google Docs. Due next Monday at noon.

1. Animal Observation:  Spend 30 min observing an active animal and create an ethogram that describes all the behaviors you observe.

2. Time Budget: For 5 of the 30 minutes, record the following (the video lecture helps explain these):

■FREQUENCY :  How many times a behavior occurs

■ DURATION:  The length of time of the duration of the behavior

■ INTENSITY:  Vigor of the behavior- what is the intensity of this behavior?

You may have a very active animal, making it challenging to get a good data set.  You could get very scientific and video the animal to make it easier to collect this data.

3. Applying the Scientific Method:

-Pick one of the behaviors you observed and form a hypothesis for why the animal does this behavior.

-What is a prediction you might make based on this hypothesis?

4.  Use Tinbergen's 4 questions to study the animal behavior you selected for your hypothesis study. Use the internet to find scientific research that addresses these questions. Please include your research sources.
