Amtrak was started in 1971 as a passenger railroad subsidized by the U.S. Federal Government. This practice has not changed: Amtrak is the only passenger train in the U.S. and, at last count, the U.S. Congress has authorized $2.3 billion to keep Amtrak going. According to a TIME magazine report, Amtrak will not be financially sound after 2008 and will require further money to stay "on track" and running.
