Three stages of negotiation are preparation, interaction, and agreement.
The example I'll use is from the time I served as a buyer for Welch Allyn. We had a critical custom transformer being manfactured in Mexico, and were notified that the Mexican plant would be closing in 90 days, and all production moving to China. For logistical and quality reasons we made the decision to find a new manufacturer before the Mexican plant closed. We all ready had a standard price for the transformer, so the preparation consisted of finding a new vendor capable of manufacturing per our specifications, and putting together a bid package consisting of the part drawing, bill of material, assembly instructions, projected annual totals and a sample. Once a vendor was selected, and a bid obtained, the interaction phase started. The interaction consisted of communication of the terms and conditions sought, the vendor counter offers, submission and qualification of a vendor sample, discussion of purchase parameters (quantities,number of deliveries, length of contract), and other details such as discrepant material resolution. The final stage agreement was a acceptance by both parties of all terms andconditions, and an issuance of the purchase agreement.
