HIS 103 Week 3 - Skill Activity

Annotated Bibliography Builder

The purpose of this activity is twofold. First, it will help you hone your library research skills so you can locate books and journal articles to support your written work. You should use this exercise to explore sources related to your Final Project. It is recommended that you select a source that you intend to use for the Final Project, which you can also use as a part of your Final Project Preparation assignment this week.

Second, it will help you focus on analyzing sources by writing annotations. What is an annotation? An annotation is a brief commentary on a scholarly book, chapter, journal article, or primary source that summarizes its central points and main argument. This activity will help you learn how to identify and explain an author’s thesis statement in the case of scholarly articles, chapters, and books. By developing an awareness of thesis statements in scholarly works, you will be better able to formulate thesis statements in your own work. In the case of primary sources, you will identify key elements of the source that will help you analyze its significance. Attention to significance will help you refine your critical thinking skills and construct arguments that support your thesis statements. This is a collective endeavor; everyone contributes by posting annotations to build an annotated bibliography that we can all draw from when developing our work.

For this activity, you will look for a primary source or scholarly secondary source that you will incorporate into your Final Project Preparation assignment this week and your Comparing and Contrasting Two Civilizations Final Project. Prior to doing starting your research and making your selection of a relevant source, reflect on what you have learned about primary, scholarly secondary and tertiary sources. Next, review the HIS103 Research Guide: Library Resources and Primary Sources. This resource will help you find appropriate sources for your written assignments. Another good place to look is among the supporting documentation that accompanies the civilization tours, which are found in the Recommended Resources area of each week.

For the content of your post, follow the guidelines for developing an annotation according to the Annotated Bibliography Builder Template, depending on your choice of either a scholarly secondary source or primary source.

Guided Response: By provide a 150-word response to two classmates, explaining why you find the scholarly secondary source or primary source interesting or potentially useful for the Final Project. If you have found sources in your own research that you think your colleagues may also value, be sure to share relevant recommendations. Finally, share any research tips or strategies that you think will help your colleagues with their work.
