ENG 121 Week 1 Discussion 1

Prepare: Prior to beginning work on this discussion,

·         Visit the following web pages: Grammar & Punctuation  , Quoting, Paraphrasing, & Summarizing , and Writing a Discussion Board Post   from the Ashford Writing Center.

·         Read the text about active reading and the SQ3R process (Chapter 2 section 2.2)

·          

·         Watch the SQ3RPlay media comment.and Active ReadingPlay media comment.videos.

·          

·         Read all three of the following essays, which are available in the Ashford Library:

o    Fifteen Takes on California

o    Wendell Berry's Wisdom

o    Free Spirits: A Legacy of Wildness

Reflect: Using the SQ3R reading method, consider how the authors you read are writing about place and how they view and interact with that setting/environment. Also, think about how those points of view compare to your own perceptions of what you see as your place.

Write: Upon reflection, select ONE of the above essays on place and write at least three paragraphs (200-300 words for each paragraph) where you accomplish the following:

·         Summarize what you read and explain what parts of the SQ3R process helped you.

·         Incorporate a quote and/or paraphrase where appropriate, with proper APA citation—see Citing Within Your Paper   from the Writing Center.

·         Make connections between what you read about place and other knowledge/experience/observations you have had about your own environment/place.

·         Articulate any questions/curiosities/predictions/challenges you have based on the reading and use examples from the essay to explain those.

·         Incorporate a quote and/or paraphrase where appropriate, with proper APA citation—see Citing Within Your Paper   from the Writing Center.

Your initial post must be at least 600 words in length and posted by Day 3. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly sources, and properly cite any references as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center’s Citing Within Your Paper (.

Guided Response: Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7. In each response,

·         State what have you learned as a result of reading about your peer’s experience, as well as how it was similar to or different from your own experience.

·         Address your classmate’s questions/curiosities/predictions/challenges that they faced.

Response posts must be at least 200 words in length. If you have questions about how to participate in discussions, consult “About Discussions” under the Course Home menu. You are not required to support your claims with additional scholarly sources; however, should you decide to use additional sources, make sure you properly cite any references. Refer to the Ashford Writing Center’s Citing Within Your Paper.  

This discussion will be assessed on a 10-point scale and is worth 5% of your final grade
