4.3 - Video Presentation

Create a video presentation of one of the following two Presentation Options (don’t do both!). Your video should be less than three minutes in length. Once complete, post your video to the discussion. Include a short summary of the video.

Option 1

Estimate the bending stress for a notional diving board of your design; assuming you were standing on its end. Hint: choose the size of the board: length (L), width (w), thickness (t). Bending moment (M) = L * your weight, I = (1/12) w * t^3, y = t/2.

Research and choose a material to make the above diving board out of. Explain why you chose the material. Include concepts like Factor of Safety, Yield Strength, Stiffness/Flexibility, and design tradeoffs in your answer.

Option 2

Compare and contrast axial and bending failure modes. Devise and conduct an experiment that would provide a good demonstration to a group of high-school students illustrating the difference between the failure modes.
