Module 1 - Discussion: Math Reflections

Reflect

Many students (and non-students) dislike thinking about or doing math and truly loathe taking a formal math class. Even if you always liked math in school or feel comfortable doing calculations for work or personal decision-making, you have probably not made much time to consider why you like/dislike math.

Describe

For this post create a brief mathematical autobiography highlighting your lifetime experiences with math – in school, at work, and in everyday life. Use the Learning Outcomes that are listed in the syllabus to connect your memories to this class.

Some things to consider writing about:

·         Your favorite math teacher and what impressed you about his/her math class

Example: “Mrs. _____ made geometry fun by _______.”

·         A bad experience in an early math class that influenced your dislike of math

Example: “I was always the slowest when we had races with number facts.”

·         Math that you use (even if a computer or calculator does the work) in your job

Example:  “I have to report the percentage of ______ to my boss every week.”

·         Making personal decisions based on math

Example: “The grocery store calculates the price per unit to help me choose.”

Try not to use these particular examples unless they are merely a springboard for additional reflections.

Your initial post should be at least 200 words and submitted by the end of the first week of this module. In the second week, read your classmates’ posts and reply to at least two with observations that add to a conversation about the course topics and previous exposure to them. You must make your initial post before you can see the posts of your classmates.
