Assignment Instructions

This week you will perform your first "wet" lab activities and observe the principles of acid/base neutralization. For each lab assignment, you should start by downloading and reviewing the lab worksheet provided below under “Supporting Materials” so that you know what is expected of you. Then, follow the instructions below on which activities you need to perform for the assignment. Once you finish your lab activities, complete and submit the lab worksheet in this assignment as a Microsoft Word file.

I strongly recommend that you perform a "dry run" before you perform any experiment in this course. You have limited amounts of reagents and may not have enough extra materials to repeat an experiment if you make an error. Read through each step carefully and identify which materials you will need. When multiple containers are involved, it is sometimes helpful to draw a diagram before you start the experiment so that you understand what materials are supposed to go in which container.

This week you will also be expected to take photographs of your lab work, create graphs, and insert these images into your lab worksheet. Plan your photographs before you begin your experiments to make sure you gather all of the required images. You will also need to resize your images so they are no more than 100 KB/image when you insert them into the lab worksheet.

Instructions: 

1. Download and read the lab worksheet provided below under “Supporting Materials.”

2. Complete the following activities from the online lab manual (Biology Lab button in the left menu):

·         Lab 2 – General Lab Safety

o    Assignments, Procedures, and Lab Drills

§  Perform Experiment 1 – Neutralization of Acids and Bases

·         Lab 1 – Introduction to Science

o    Introduction (all sections under the “Introduction to Science” heading)

o    Assignments, Procedures, and Lab Drills

§  Complete and pass the Lab Drill

§  Perform Exercises 1 through 5

§  DO NOT perform Experiment 1

3. Fill out the lab worksheet. Save your work as a Microsoft Word document and name your file Lastname_Firstname_BIOL133_LabAssg2
