Assignment Instructions

You will use a commercial laboratory kit from eScience Labs for the laboratory component of this course. Some of the laboratory activities in this course require the use of chemicals, glass, or sharp laboratory instruments; therefore, you must have a safe work area available to perform laboratory activities. Your safety is critical, and all students are required to comply with all published safety and laboratory instructions.

You will also submit written and video-based laboratory reports throughout this course. Your first assignment will demonstrate your understanding of the safety instructions and your ability to record and submit video for an assignment.

Instructions:

Complete the following activities from the online lab manual (Biology Lab button in the left menu):

·  Getting Started

o    All sections under the “Getting Started” heading

o    DO NOT submit the lab safety contract

·  Lab 2 – General Lab Safety

o    Introduction (all sections under the “General Lab Safety” heading)

o    Assignments, Procedures, and Lab Drills

§  Complete and pass the Lab Drill

§  DO NOT perform Exercise 1 or Experiment 1

Create a short video (1-3 minutes) based on the safety information provided in your lab manual. Your video must include the following elements:

1.      Introduce yourself

2.      Demonstrate and describe proper lab attire

3.      Show the location where you plan on performing your experiments and describe why this is a safe work area

4.      Confirm that you competed for for an inventory of your kit and that you reported any missing/broken items to eScience Labs

Submission Instructions: Upload your video to the assignment using the Kaltura icon in the Rich Text Editor (RTE) window.

Detailed instructions are available below under “Supporting Materials.” This is the preferred method so that your video plays in the classroom. After you insert the video into the RTE, you can “preview” your video prior to submitting your assignment. After you submit your assignment, you can view your video under "Assignment Feedback."
