Process of combining data into groups

Process of combining data into groups

Qualitative vs. Quantitative Data

·         Qualitative: recorded descriptions
Quantitative: usually numbers (tables & graphs)

Absolute data

·         raw, unprocessed data

Derived Data

·         Data calculated from other data.

What is data classification?

·         Process of combining data into groups, or classes, with each class represented by a different symbol

What happens when you change the data classification?

·         Greatly affects spatial representation

What is equal interval classification?

·         A data classification method that divides a set of attribute values into groups that contain an equal range of values. (Results in each class having a different number of values, but the same range.)

How do you calculate the class interval?

·         Range/number of classes

What is quantile classification?

·         Each class contains an equal number of features. Quantile assigns the same number of data values to each class, so there are no empty data classes or classes with too few or too many values.

Natural Breaks Classification

·         looks at how the data naturally clumps, and thus creates natural gaps between the clumps.

What is another method of classification?

·         Standard deviations around the mean

What are issues associated with picking an unsuitable classification method?

·         Could results in empty classes, or the same value in different classes.
