Self Reflection #1-The Speech I Want to Hear 

We spend A LOT more time listening than we do talking – both in this class and in our everyday lives.

You learned in our Introduction Speech Zoom Session that we spend a few minutes talking and a great deal of time listening in our speech sessions.  People gravitate towards different things, but I bet you heard some speeches that you really enjoyed and learned from.  The first part of this assignment is to identify things about speeches that you really enjoy.

Part I: What kind of speech would you like to hear?

Seriously.  Think back to our first Zoom session or think about great speeches that you've heard. Make a list of at least five things that you'd like to see more of in the next round of speeches. Your list can include anything from nonverbals (e.g., The speaker had natural gestures and movement) to vocalics (e.g., An engaging, enthusiastic tone) to content (e.g., the speaker really knew what she was talking about.). Totally random teaching moment:  e.g. stands for exempli gratia, which means for the sake of example in Latin.  Okay. Back to this assignment: Jot down your list.

Part II: How do I give THAT speech?

Now for the harder part.  It's generally pretty easy to identify the things we like to see others do.  Now we have to do it ourselves.  Under each item on your list, write down how you can incorporate that thing you love in to your own speech.  Let's say, for example, that you really liked the speakers with an enthusiastic tone.  That portion of your assignment might look like:

I need to choose an informative topic that I'm pretty stoked about, and then let my enthusiasm show.  Even though I fear sounding dumb or weird, I've come to recognize that I appreciate and like speeches given by enthusiastic speakers.  I need to give myself permission to be pumped about my topic and to let it show.

Your completed assignment will identify at least five things that you have observed in other speeches that you like.  Each of these  items will then be followed by a plan or strategy for making each thing happen in your next speech.  This assignment does not have to be long. Just good!  Go get 'em!
