Overview

Here is an opportunity to listen to some American Jazz/Swing music from two different African American musicians. Duke Ellington was not only a band leader and arranger, but he was also an amazing composer of a variety of compositions that have endured throughout time into our current era. Count Basie was a phenomenal musician and arranger as well as a band leader. His arrangements were magnificent. In their time, Duke Ellington and Count Basie were greatly revered.


Assignment

·         Please listen to the music pieces listed below: and then please answer the following questions:

o    What is your reaction to all of these musical pieces? Explain how they compare to the music that you enjoy listening to every day. (80 Words)

o    Which of them appeals to you the most? Explain which 3 elements in the piece you find the most appealing in regard to rhythm, tempo, and cadence? (100 Words)

Did you know? Duke Ellington was an amazing composer. He composed an entire album based on Shakespeare's plays. You can hear one of the songs from his iconic album on youtube. "Such Sweet Thunder" is a line from Shakespear's Midsummer Night's Dream.
