Module 3/Discussion #4
Overview
Two of the paintings for this assignment are
from Josef Albers and one is from Robert Rauschenberg. I have a print of one of
the Albers painting in my bedroom. It is a favorite painting of mine. Albers
was famous for his use of color. There is in fact, a spiritual quality to his
use of color. He wrote a famous book on color entitled: Interaction of
Color. In his book he states: "If one is not able to distinguish
the difference between a higher tone and a lower tone, one probably should not
make music." His point in his works was to illuminate for us the beauty of
color tones--such an exciting visual experience! And, the White
Painting by Rauschenberg may make you laugh or even angry--how can
this be art? But, the fact that we react to it--that is what the artist wants
from us--a reaction!
The questions I have asked you are designed to get you to trust
your sensual responses to things. Are they aesthetically pleasing or not? It is
up to you to decide! Throughout your educational formation you are compelled to
offer brilliant critical thoughts--but, now I want you to forget all of those
contrived responses. Instead, you need to be liberated--express what your first
reaction to them is--laugh if you like--state that they are silly--but whatever
you write, make it genuine and real for yourself. That is what we do in our
Humanities studies.
