An example of a U.S. based company that had a business issue in a foreign market would be Wal-Mart, inc. attempt to enter the German market in 1997. The company entered the market bringing with it the traditions and expectations of the U.S. consumer base. Proper market research was not conducted, and the company was a late entry into an established market. The company did not take into consideration the reaction the community and consumers did not take well to Wal-Mart’s approach to customer service, including the door greeters and otherpeople touching and bagging their groceries. The company did attempt to make changes to the business model but ended up pulling out of the German Market in 2006 at a loss of $1 Billion. (Irish Times 2006).
