Week 3: Compare-Contrast Essay Topic Selection

This week you will begin working on a compare-contrast essay that will be completed in Week 4. Our discussion will serve as an opportunity to focus your ideas and begin to draft your own essay. Consider this exercise and important part of the prewriting process!

I also encourage you to review pages 201-205 in our ebook, where you will find great ideas about comparing and contrasting advertisements, products, and social media images! Chapter 3 also includes sample essays!

Once you have decided upon a topic, please share it with us in your initial post for this week, providing answers to the following questions in complete sentences.

1.    What is the tentative title of your essay?

2.    What are you comparing and contrasting?

3.    Is the primary purpose of your essay evaluative or informative? What do you want your readers to know?

4.    Are you planning to use the block pattern or the point-by-point pattern? Explain the reasoning behind your choice.

5.    What criteria will you be using? (Name at least three.)

After making your initial post, provide detailed and helpful feedback to at least two of your fellow classmates. For example, you may wish to suggest additional criteria or share your knowledge on the topic. Scroll down through the posts to find students who have not yet been replied to first.
