MATH 111 Week 2 Discussion 1 | american-public-university-system

During week 2 you should have been continued your exploration of Functions and Their Graphs.

Just a quick check

·         Remember that domain and range are describing all possible x and all possible y values, respectively. If you get them confused think about “d” before “r” and “x” before “y”. It is easy to switch them around.

·         If you have a fractional function, you have to remember that the domain can be determined by deciding where the denominator will be equal to zero. You might have to factor it and then use the zero product rules.

·         Piecewise functions need to be plotted based on the value of x.

·         Please memorize the shape of the graphs, you will need to know them.

·         Understand that any graph can change in shape based on the reflection, horizontal shifts, vertical shifts, and whether it is skinnier or wider than the original function. You should be able to look at any function and state whether any of the four shifts have taken place by just looking at the function.

·         Reflections are usually around an axis, symmetry can be around an equation, which could be considered the “fold line” of the curve.

·         When you use operations on functions, standard algebraic rules apply.

·         Composite functions are made up of multiple functions.

·         The difference function if basically the slope of the function between two points.

·         Rational functions usually have a value which will make the function undefined (sometimes more than one)

·         Vertical and Horizontal Asymptotes are basically "do not cross" lines for the function.

·         Inverse Functions "switch" the values of x and y.

For Week 3 you will be looking at Quadratic Functions, Composite Functions, Rational Functions, and Inverse Functions.
