PHIL 2600 Discussion 6 | Tulane University

9/23 ^ 9/25 discussion board

We will cover Richard Arneson’s article “What is Wrongful Discrimination?” on 9/23 and 9/25.

1) Suppose residential segregation occurs and is explainable in the way that Schelling describes (775-777). Has any kind of wrongful discrimination occurred? Are the actions of any individual people morally wrong? Should the state step in and try and fix any disparate harms that might occur as a result of there being such segregated neighborhoods?  Closed to new posts as we covered this question in class.

2) How does Arenson define wrongful discrimination? How is this different from “innocent” or perhaps “non-wrongful" kinds of discrimination?

3) Explain the donut shop counterexamples (784-785).

4) Some of the policy suggestions (see, A. Age and B. Sex) Arenson gives are, although discriminatory, aimed at achieving fairness. Are they fair?
