Week 1 Discussion

It is time to start thinking about topics that you might be interested in. For the remainder of this class, you will stick with one topic and develop a research question for that topic. Unlike topics you may have selected for other classes, selecting a research methods topic is a rigorous process in thinking and developing a mental plan as to how the topic can be systematically researched. Begin by reading the Introductory Lecture found in the Week 1 Readings folder.

Please note: students often choose research topics that are very personal to them. Please avoid this because every time you work on that topic, you have the potential to retraumatize yourself. If you plan to take SOC 340, there is a strong possibility that you will continue to work with the topic you chose in SOC 331. As you are choosing your topic, think about how you will feel if you have to work with a very personal topic for up to 14 weeks.

Remember: Good research questions cannot be answered with yes or no and usually begin with how or why.

Tell us what topic you are interested in studying and why this interests you. What question do you have about the topic?
