Your city council is planning to adopt the newest version of the building code. They have asked you to provide them with an explanation of what occupancies are required to have an automatic sprinkler system installed, and they are specifically interested in residential occupancies.

In addition to Residential occupancies, pick two other occupancies from the supplied building codes, provide an explanation as to why an automatic sprinkler system is required, and discuss how these systems provide for occupant and firefighter safety.

Prepare a two-page essay for your city council that addresses the items listed below for each of the occupancies:

 explain the occupancy hazards;

 explain why an automatic sprinkler system is required;

 explain the benefits of installing automatic sprinkler systems; and

 specifically for residential occupancies, provide data from at least one community that has benefited from adopting residential sprinkler codes.

The IBC Chapter 9 Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems code information will be helpful in completing this assignment.
