Overview

This discussion will help the students identify the use of statistics in the media. Statistics are all around us. Once you set out to look for them, you'll find that they are commonly used in news and business websites. This discussion will help you understand the effectiveness of statistics, both from an academic perspective, as well as a real-world one.  Note by "media," your instructor means both print and online sources, however, do not use educational examples or problems.  Students are required to include a working link to the news article.

Instructions

Please locate a print or online article that uses statistics of some kind. Then,

1.   make one original post in which you summarize the statistics found in the article (and be sure to actually state at least one numerical statistic),

2.   make a comment on how well the author(s) of the article uses the statistics mentioned, and

3.   include a working link (not just a reference).

After you've posted your original post, please post at least two substantive replies (on separate days) to others' posts.

It's to your advantage to post early in the discussion window as media articles can only be used once. The student posting a media article that has already been used will earn a maximum of half the points for the discussion.

You are also highly encouraged to read your peer's posts before you post, to ensure that articles aren't being used twice and that your post is on the right track.
