Discussion #3 Sensory and Motor Systems of the Brain

In the previous module we learned about the brilliant structures of the brain and how neurons of the brain communicate via electrical impulses called action potentials and release of various chemicals called neurotransmitters.

In this module discussion, apply your knowledge about the different Sensory Systems that bring information to the brain and the Motor System that ultimately allow the brain to produce movements (behaviors).

Before you begin, please review chapter readings and study guide for Ch. 6 and 7 [Sensation and Perception] and Ch. 8 [Movement].

For this assignment:

PICK A FAVORITE HOBBY/ACTIVITY (i.e. playing sports, dance, working out, cooking or playing a musical instrument….).  Then as if you are explaining to another person break down into a few steps:

·         The sensory STRUCTURES and PATHWAYS that takes the information to the brain. Include details, names of structures, functions of those structures, pathways they take in the brain, and how information is being coordinated through the brain.

·         The motor STRUCTURES and PATHWAYS that produce the movements of your hobby/activity. Include details, names of structures, functions of those structures, pathways and how information is being passed through the brain.

For example, shooting basketball hoop: Vision structures and pathways are involved as you see the ball in your hand and see the basketball net in the distance (provide details).  As you adjust the hold of the ball in your hand, pressure receptors in your hands are active.  If you are playing part of a team, you will also receive information from auditory systems (provide details).  After you receive the relevant sensory input, your brain will activate the motor system structures and pathways in order for you to raise your arm, hold the ball in your palm and fingers and throw towards the net hopefully making the 3 point shot (provide details).  Your muscles (details), proprioceptors and different parts of the motor cortex (details) will all come into play before you can execute the movement.  There are pathway cables that run down your spinal cord from your brain.

*In order to earn full points in this assignment, I will be looking for detailed descriptions of brain structures and pathways.
