Assessment Description
This assessment is worth 50% of the total mark (qualifying mark 30%). Please refer to the Module Definition Form for further details.
Students should utilise the following scenario and prepare a 2000-word report detailing their activities and plan of action.
You are the Quality Control Manager of a medium sized manufacturing company that specialises in the production of brass rings. The following data presents the number of nonconformities observed in 10 consecutive samples of 100 brass rings. The inspection unit is defined as 100 rings and thickness is being measured for them.
Construct a control chart for nonconformities from the data provided in the table above.
Determine if the process is under control or not and comment on the control chart with emphasis on the emergence of any patterns or issues.
Your Managing Director is unsatisfied with the level of quality control as evident from the high number of non-conformities in the table above. She is interested in quality improvement, but is unsure which quality management philosophy to adopt. You have been tasked to critically analyse Juran's quality trilogy and total quality management. Your analysis should discuss their pros/cons and suitability for your company in detail (with the help of literature). Based on the analysis, you should make a recommendation as to which quality philosophy should be chosen and highlight the steps to be taken that can help improve quality at your company. Please make use of peer-reviewed literature to support your claims as appropriate.
