Complete four anecdotal observations and reflections
PART A BIG IDEA ASSIGNMENT
Instructions
You will complete the preliminary stages of the Big Idea Curriculum
Development document for Part A of this assignment.
You must:
·
Complete
four anecdotal observations and reflections that clearly demonstrate a common
and pervasive interest from the selection of videos available in the Videatives
database from Buchanan Library
·
Identify
the “Big Idea” from the observations
·
Write
a rationale for the “Big Idea,” explaining why you have chosen that big idea.
This must be three to five sentences long.
·
Create
a ‘web’ to document your big idea.
o
This
documentation is to be completed on a poster board or flip chart paper and it
will include concepts related to (minimum of 6 initial concepts and 12
sub-concepts) the big idea and options for play activities and play areas.
Include a minimum of 20 activity ideas, with at least six different curriculum
areas identified. Differentiate between concepts and experience ideas by using
shapes or colours. Include a legend on your web so that the reader knows
what each shape/colour means.
o
Ensure
your web is written in dark ink on a light background so that your instructor
can easily read it on-line. You can see an example of a beginning web in
modules.
o
This
web may be hand written and submitted through photos. Be sure that your writing is
legible and that the photos are clear enough to be able to read ALL content.
You may need to take several photos of the web in sections as well as one photo
of the entire web.

Area - fine motor table activities
You must follow the principles of emergent curriculum when completing
your curriculum development and implementation for this assignment. Each
portion of the curriculum development process must be informed by a documented
observation. Again, you will view videos from Videatives to complete this
observation.
Development of the play area also includes the creation of a display
board with photographs of the topic of interest, a place for the web, space for
a documentation board, and room for documentation of the play area and 3 other
play experiences (to be planned/completed in part B2). A book display of
children’s picture story books about the topic of interest will also be added
to the display board using photos of books (taken from the internet or photos
taken of actual books). Additions are also to be made to the web and a new
photo taken and inserted into the document.
