Module 4 Discussion 2: Ethics of Advertising
As stated in the eText, “the word persuasion has
negative connotations for some, especially in a marketing or sales context.”
The legal aspects of promotional communication can be complex, varying from
state to state and the ethical concerns add even more complexity. Review the
“Maintaining High Standards of Ethics, Legal Compliance, and Etiquette” section
in our eText; starting on page 340 before participating in this discussion. You
will also need to do some additional online research.
Instructions
This is a two-part discussion that should include
at least three-posts. In your first post, you should include all of the
information requested in #1 and #2 below:
1. Identify an ethical or legal advertising lapse you
have found online, on television or on social media. Utilize the following list
as a guide to get started:
o Not truthful, deceptive, misleading
o Claims not backed by evidence
o Bait and switch advertising
o Messages aimed at children
o Messages that are considered binding contracts
o Improper use of name, photo, identity
2. Provide a summary of the lapse in your initial
post, identify the violation and state how the advertiser could have avoided
such missteps.
3. Next, read other posts and place substantive peer
replies (i.e., ask a question, provide an example, site a personal experience,
share a meaningful resource, incorporate e-text readings) to at least two other
students. Watch for new threads and/or changes in direction. Responses to
follow-up instructor questions do not count as peer replies.
1. Submit your initial post(s) early in the week.
Students are required to respond to the initial question(s) or comments by
Thursday at 11:59 pm.
2. A reply to at least two of your classmates’ posts
should be made by midnight on Sunday (before 11:59 pm).
3. Revisit the discussion forum on multiple days to
respond to what other learners have posted.
4. Posts and responses should be complete and free of
grammatical or structural errors. Do not use text messaging format.
