The person(s) responsible for bringing a civil action against
Lance, the hacker, are the people whose 15,00 credit card numbers were
allegedly stolen and sold on the black market. They can individually or
collectively sue in class action lawsuits. After the jury finds Lance
responsible, the plaintiff(s) will receive a judgment of an "injunction
and some monetary damages (Beatty)." The type of case implies that
monetary compensation would be awarded.
A criminal case will be brought against Lance by the government.
The district attorney will "bring the case to court" (Beatty) on
behalf of the government. If Lance is found guilty unanimously by all 12
jurors, he will serve time in jail and/or pay fines. The monetary compensation
in the criminal case does not go to the victim; it goes to the state (Beatty).
I think in this case, Lance will get sentenced to both to deter a similar
future crime.
