PSYC 101 Week 16 Discussion  | MiraCosta College

Based on everything you’ve learned in our class over the entire semester, what do you believe about free will? Do you believe that people are generally free to choose their behavior? Or do you believe they are not free to choose? Do you believe that you are free to change things about yourself that you are not happy with? Do you believe that others can change a behavior when being pressured by someone they are in a relationship with? Are some behaviors “free-er” than others? If so, which behaviors are we more able to choose or control and which ones are we less able to choose or control? If you believe that there are limits to how “free” we are, what do you believe determines our behavior (e.g. neurotransmitters, genes, our environment, our unconscious minds, etc.)? And finally, what does all of this imply about the self-help industry? Does it make sense to buy a book or attend a motivational talk if our hope is to change something about ourselves?
