1. Why did you select your news story? What about the story makes it interesting to you both personally and
scientifically?
I have a good friend who struggles with chronic fatigue syndrome, so this topic caught my eye. I am also
interested in learning more about probiotics, and the link between the bacteria that live in the human gut and
different disease and health issues.
2. What did you already know about the topic before selecting the news story? What opinions or assumptions had
you made about it?
I knew what the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome are based on my friend’s experience. I knew that it is a
long-term illness with no known cause or cure. I also knew a little bit about gut bacteria and its importance to
health. I had never heard of a link between chronic fatigue syndrome and gut bacteria, so I assumed there was
no connection.
3. Which concepts covered in the course relate to your news story? How?
Several concepts from this course relate to the news story I chose. The description of the research performed to
come to the conclusions presented in this story is a great example of the scientific method in action, as
discussed in Theme 1. The research described would be considered “good” science, as data was collected and
evaluated, which gives me more confidence in the findings. In Theme 2, we’ve been discussing curiosity and
observations. This article is a great example of scientists thinking about a disease in a whole new context and
looking for a link to something unexpected. It also challenges some assumptions that people have about chronic
fatigue syndrome—that it can’t be cured or treated, or that people just “imagine” their symptoms.
4. What question do you have about the topic in the news story? Select one question that interests you based on
your topic exploration graphic organizer and previous responses.
I would like to focus on this question: “Does abnormal gut bacteria cause chronic fatigue syndrome?”
5. Why would this question be important to a natural scientist?
Biology and medicine are natural sciences. Someone studying in these fields would be interested in finding the
cause, and potentially cure or treatment, for a disease. This would improve the quality of life for patients with
chronic fatigue syndrome, and also potentially reveal more about the relationship between gut bacteria and
human health.
