While there are multiple discussion topics the participation
rules remain the same. Your response post can be on any one of them and your
reply posts can be in response to classmate’s discussions of any of them.
Discussion Topic #1 - Is there a difference
between service quality and product quality? If so, what are the implications
of these differences for a manager of a service business, such as a restaurant
or a retail store?
Discussion Topic #2 - The
Relationship Between Price and Quality
There are literally dozens of new ideas and theories introduced
by the great quality gurus, Deming, Juran, Crosby, and Ishikawa. Far too many
to discuss in Week 1 although we will eventually get to the majority of them
over the next 4 weeks. However, as a starting point I think it would be
both interesting and instructive to open with one of Deming’s most
revolutionary ideas, identified in his fourth point.
Deming’s 4th point says, “End the Practice of
Awarding Business on Price Tag Alone."
That flies in the face of the ‘conventional wisdom’ that enjoins
us to have many suppliers for every item that we buy to force competition among
them.
I would like us to discuss two questions embedded in that simple
phrase:
1. Is
there a difference between the ‘price that we pay’ for anything, and the cost
of using or consuming it?
2. If we
treat suppliers as partners rather than as the enemy bent on delivering shoddy
merchandise at the highest possible price, does that have an effect on the
quality of what they sell to us?
