Module 3 Discussions -
Reading as a Believer
'Reading with the grain' means reading to
understand what the author is saying. This is the way we read most of the time.
This tests comprehension. It is important to accurately understand an author's
position and arguments before trying to respond with our own ideas. Reading
with the grain is reading as a believer. This exercise lets you practice
reading with the grain.
1. Read Chapter 5; stop
at page 92 "Understanding Strong Response Writing" (Ramage, et al.).
2. Summarize the
following piece of writing in no more than 35 words and post your summary.
Peer review is an excellent way for students to help each other become
better writers. To guide students in giving useful feedback, here are three
suggestions:
Choose a favorite sentence. Ask the writer to mark a favorite sentence in
his or her own piece; this motivates careful re-reading. Ask the student
responder to do the same; this is a simple way to bring about encouraging
feedback.
Identify juicy verbs. Have students trade drafts, circle all the verbs in
a section or passage, and suggest more informative ones. Sharpening verbs
sharpens thinking and also helps develop a vocabulary appropriate to the
discipline.
Pay attention to the curiosity response. Have
students read each other's work, marking places that provoke a desire or need
for more information or discussion. In the margin, the reader should say what
he or she would like to know more about.
