GOVT 2305 Week 1 Assignment 1 | Central Texas College | Assignment Help
Lesson 1 Writing Assignment
For this assignment, choose ONE of
the writing prompts and write a minimum 300 word essay. For more detailed
instructions, review the Instructions
for Lesson Writing Assignments.
**Do not use quotations or
paraphrases from any sources for this assignment. You can use sources, of
course, but do not quote them or paraphrase them. This essay is short, and it
needs to be obvious from YOUR words that you understand the material.**
This paper must be between 300 and 450 words
long. You will lose points if your paper is too short or too long. Do not turn
this assignment into a mini-research paper. A one- or two-sentence intro,
response to all parts of the prompt, and a one- or two-sentence closing is all
you need. Turning it into a 500+ word essay complete with intro paragraph,
paragraph for each major support, and closing paragraph is not what is needed
for this assignment.
Also, you are expected to maintain formal,
academic standards. Do not make your paper chatty. Do not use first or second
person (I, we, you). Edit your work. Then edit it again. Then again. Use
spellcheck. Do not turn in a rough draft -- it will make a very low grade. Put
a heading on your paper. Put a title on your paper (the name of the assignment
is not a title). Use the skills learned in Freshman English. The expectations
enumerated in this paragraph are those expected in all academic and
professional writing, and failure to achieve proper academic standards affects
the grade. This is a university-level class, and university-level work is
expected.
Format your paper. Formatting your paper consist of putting a heading on it and putting a
title. The name of the assignment is not a title. The name of the assignment
should be given in the heading. Don't use a cover sheet.
It is not necessary to copy the prompt.
Copying the prompt does not count toward the required word count. Works cited
entries do not count toward the required word count.
1) Why did the
Articles of Confederation fail? What reasons might explain why someone would
prefer the Articles of Confederation to the Constitution? What were the biggest
benefits of the Constitution over the Articles of Confederation?
2) Many participants
at the U.S. Constitutional Convention had something at stake in the formation
of the Constitution. Focus specifically on the Three-Fifths Compromise. Which
groups had things at stake in this compromise, what did they have at stake, and
how did each try to get what they wanted?
Instructions for
Lesson Writing Assignments
The Lesson Writing Assignments are worth
40 points each. Students are expected to answer all of the questions for
the selected writing prompt. Submissions that are more comprehensive and
detailed will earn a higher point total. This exercise is to show that
you have read the material and that you have thought about the issues. Your
submissions should be several substantial paragraphs (minimum
300 words and maximum 450 words).
**Do not use quotations or paraphrases from any sources for these
assignments. You can use sources, of course, but do not quote them or
paraphrase them. These essays are short, and it needs to be obvious from YOUR
words that you understand the material.**
Using
a quote but then not using quotation marks and not putting a citation -- does
not mean that you are "not using quotations". It means that you are
committing plagiarism. Using material from an assigned reading course without
citing it is plagiarism. It doesn't matter where it comes from: reading
assignment, textbook, Internet, anywhere. If you did not come up with that
string of words, if somebody else came up with it, and you do not put it in
quotation marks and give that other person their due credit, then it is
plagiarism. It is not an end-run around the "no quotations on this assignment
rule" -- it is plagiarism. Don't do it. You will lose a lot of points if
you do.

material will receive a significant reduction in points or a zero.
Students may receive a failing grade in the course for submitting plagiarized
material. Do
not cut and paste information from an online source or
copy information directly from the textbook. You may need to include data
from the chapter or a related article in your writing assignment and it is
necessary to include citations for this information. The assignment is to be
formatted according to the Modern Language Association (MLA) style which
includes a works cited page but does NOT include a title page. For assistance
with MLA style visit the Purdue Online Writing Lab.
