Week Three Options Menu: Forum

All poems to be discussed are in the "Learning Activities" tab in Lesson 3.

1. Discuss setting and character is a specific poem. What themes might be apparent as a result of the setting and character portrayed in the poem? If someone has already discussed a specific poem for this discussion, choose another poem.

2. Synesthesia is a mixing of the senses, when one sense is expected but another is used. For example, in Frost's "Fire and Ice," he says, "tasted desire," when one might expect a feeling of desire. Feeling blue (mixing tactile imagery with the visual) or saying that a piece of music is cool, or hot, are common examples of synesthesia. Can you find some other examples of synesthesia in the assigned poems? What is the effect created in each of your examples? If someone else has addressed this discussion, be sure that you do not use the same examples.

3. Why do you think that the open form of poetry (without rhyme or meter) IS poetry and not simply prose? What characteristics stand out that classify the open form as poetry?

4. Discuss rhyme and meter and other poetry devices that might be related to rhyme and meter, such as sonnet, couplet, repetition, or enjambment, in a specific poem. Why do you think the author chose to use this particular rhyme and meter? If someone has already discussed a specific poem for this discussion, choose another poem.

5. Discuss the words and images used in a specific poem.  What figurative language might be used to enhance the words and images? How are the words and images effective in making the speaker’s point? If someone has already discussed a specific poem for this discussion, choose another poem.
